What is a milk allergy?
A milk allergy is an abnormal response by the body’s immune system to one or more of the components in milk from any animal – cow, sheep, goat or buffalo. When this happens, the immune system views milk proteins as harmful and so signals the body to produce antibodies in order to neutralize the perceived threat of the allergen. There are two main proteins that can cause an allergic reaction: casein, which is found in the solid part of milk that curdles and whey, which is found in the liquid part of milk that remains after milk curdles. An individual with a milk allergy may be allergic to one or both of these milk proteins. It is important to note that these proteins are also found in other dairy products as well as processed foods.
Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. Signs and symptoms of milk allergy are different in each person and can range from mild to severe. Immediate signs and symptoms may include hives, wheezing or vomiting. Signs and symptoms that may take more time to develop include loose stools, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, coughing or wheezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy skin, or (in babies) colic. Rarely, milk allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a reaction that can narrow the airways, block breathing and be life threatening.
The difference between lactose intolerance and milk allergy is that milk allergy involves the body’s immune system, while lactose intolerance does not. Milk doesn’t reduce fractures. Contrary to popular belief, eating dairy products has never been shown to reduce fracture risk. In fact, according to the Nurses’ Health Study (one of the largest, long-term studies to examine the effect of diet on health), dairy may increase the risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Osteoporosis leads to increased fractures, loss of height, hip and back pain, and spinal curvature. Since osteoporosis is a disease of bone loss, and since 99% of the body’s calcium is found in bone, it makes sense to think that if people eat as much calcium as possible, osteoporosis risk may be diminished. Yet, the reverse is true. Countries with the lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (like those in Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis. The U.S. has one of the highest calcium intakes in the world, yet osteoporosis affects about 25% of postmenopausal women in the US.
About 75 percent of the world’s population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products, a condition known as lactose intolerance. That means the reverse of this statement is actually true; only a small segment of the world’s population is able to digest milk and other dairy products.
Research shows that higher intakes of both dairy products and calcium may increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer by 30 to 50 percent. In addition, dairy consumption increases the body’s level of a known cancer promoter called insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). (Source: The Cancer Project)
According to Dr. Walter Willet, M.D., professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health and professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, the potential impact of a healthy diet, when combined with not smoking and regular physical activity, is enormous. His studies have shown about 82 percent of heart attacks, about 70 percent of strokes, over 90 percent of type 2 diabetes, and over 70 percent of colon cancer, could be prevented with the right dietary choices as part of a health lifestyle. The best drugs can only reduce the occurrence of heart attacks by about 20 or 30 percent.
