Dairy Free or Lactose Free? Which is the best cheese substitute for you?
When choosing which GO Veggie!™ cheese alternative is right for you, it’s important to understand the difference between the terms ‘lactose free’ and ‘dairy free.’
Lactose free means a product is free of lactose, a sugar found in milk and, to a lesser extent, milk-derived dairy products. An individual who is lactose intolerant has an inability to digest lactose. Lactose intolerance is very common in adults and is not dangerous. The National Institute of Health (NIH) estimates that 30 million American adults have some amount of lactose intolerance by age 20.
Dairy free means a product is free of any component of milk. An individual who has a milk allergy has an adverse reaction to one or more of the components in milk from any animal, though an allergy to casein, a protein in cow’s milk, is the most common. Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. A milk allergy can cause anaphylaxis – a severe, life-threatening reaction.

Lifelong Health Benefits of Removing Animal Protein from Your Diet
Increasingly, people are discovering that they feel and look better when they remove or reduce the amount of animal products in their diet. The benefits of removing animal protein from your diet include weight loss, increased energy, reduction in or elimination of the need for certain costly medications, a decrease in risk factors for certain diseases including heat disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers and inflammatory diseases.
Why is this? According to recent scientific literature, there is a link between eating a diet heavy in animal products and disease. For example, in The China Study (a 20-year study described by the New York Times as “the most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease”) researchers compared the diets in towns throughout China and found that when consumption of animal products increased, there was a corresponding increase in the occurrences of the types of cancers that are common in the West. Most cancers increased in direct proportion to the quantity of animal products eaten and decreased relative to the amount of fruits, vegetables, and beans consumed. Areas of China with exceptionally low intakes of animal products were virtually free of the cancers and heart disease that develop in most people living in Western countries.
Plant-based cheese alternatives such as GO Veggie!™ dairy free cheese can be helpful in moving toward a plant-centered diet with less saturated fat, less animal protein, more plant protein and more fruits and vegetables.
Is Lactose Free the Same as Dairy Free?
No. Lactose free is not dairy free. Lactose free cheese alternatives may contain casein, a lactose-free milk protein. Casein is found in foods that are derived from dairy ingredients and provides nutrition and the typical functional properties of a protein, such as melting and binding. As such, products that contain casein are not dairy free. If you cannot or prefer not to eat dairy then our lactose free cheese products (in the green packaging) are not for you.
If you want dairy free due to a milk allergy or lifestyle choice, then simply look for our line of GO Veggie!™ dairy free cheese alternative products in the purple packaging. Check out our dairy free cheese slices, shreds, and cream cheese alternatives – we think these are the best non dairy cheese products around!
